Recycling
The SRA have continued and expanded the Community’s existing recycling initiatives and have continued to take up opportunities to assist the Community with recycling opportunities and education.
These have included:
- The SRA has continued to fund and support recycling initiatives in Somers. Principal among these is the recycling station situated at SGS. We would like to extend the Community’s thanks to Dean & Zoe of SGS for allowing the recycling station to be located at the side entrance to the Somers Store. So far Somers has recycled almost 300 Kilos of oral care / dental products / medicine containers / blister packs etc. There is a range of other household items / rubbish which can be ethically disposed of at the Recycling station.
- Blister pack recycling is now available at the Bittern Pharmacy and we have been in discussions with Bendigo Bank about expanding this to other pharmacies and communities across the whole of the Mornington Peninsula.
- We booked the Council’s Recycling Trailer during the year and many kilos of electrical goods and small household appliances were able to be removed and recycled.
- We provided recycling collection boxes to the Somers Primary School.
- We arranged for Container Deposit Scheme bins to be installed by the Shire Council in Somers when we discovered that there was no initial plan to have these in our area.
- We have continued to provide dog bag dispensers and supplies and to upgrade the infrastructure to reduce dog waste at Somers beaches.
We are confident that recycling efforts in Somers are growing and that as a result we are having a positive impact for the environment. Our initiatives, which have been in place for several years, are now maturing and other villages are interested in following our learnings and examples. The SRA remains committed to reducing waste and improving our natural environment for everyone’s benefit.
